Is Foot Massage Safe During Pregnancy? Can it induce labor?

Have you heard that getting a foot massage during pregnancy can send you into labor?

Can you even imagine?!

I would be the busiest massage therapist around!

Why would anyone need to go to the hospital for a medical induction if they could just come get a foot massage? LOL!

But seriously, this is one of the pregnancy massage myths I hear all the time.

And I understand why it makes some pregnant women nervous.

Can foot massage really induce labor?

You may have heard that there are certain pressure points on the feet and around the ankles that can stimulate labor.

These points are sometimes used in acupressure and reflexology treatments intended to encourage labor.

But here's what's important to understand: There isn't convincing scientific evidence that ordinary foot massage—or pressing a particular point on the foot—reliably induces labor.

Over my years of working with pregnant women, I've provided massage to clients who were 41 weeks pregnant and hoping labor would begin.

Some went into labor afterward. Others still needed medical inductions.

Does that mean the massage started labor for some of them? We really can't know.

What I do know is that a relaxing massage can offer something valuable during those final days of pregnancy: an opportunity to rest, feel supported, and release some tension.

And that alone can be wonderful.

What if your partner accidentally presses the wrong point?

This is what I really want pregnant women to know.

You don't need to be afraid that your partner will accidentally send you into premature labor by rubbing your feet.

A gentle, ordinary foot massage isn't an established method of inducing labor.

Of course, pregnancy comes with individual health considerations. Significant or sudden swelling, especially in one leg with pain, redness, or warmth, should be evaluated by a healthcare professional rather than massaged.

Why foot massage feels so good during pregnancy

Think about everything your feet are doing!

As your pregnancy progresses, your body weight and center of gravity change. You may also experience more fluid retention, swelling, and tired, achy feet.

Your feet are working hard!

A comfortable foot massage can be a lovely way to relax, soothe tired muscles, and enjoy a little nurturing touch.

And you don't need a complicated technique.

A gentle massage from your partner can feel absolutely heavenly.

So, is foot massage safe during pregnancy?

For most people with uncomplicated pregnancies, gentle foot massage is generally considered appropriate.

If you have pregnancy complications, concerning swelling, or symptoms that haven't been evaluated, check with your maternity care provider before massage.

And if you're receiving professional prenatal massage, choose someone with appropriate pregnancy-specific training.

So let your partner massage your feet.

And partners, massage her feet!

She deserves it.
